The funeral of Ryan Speirs, victim of the Magherafelt jammer accident, will take place on Wednesday


The funeral of a young man who died after an accident involving a jammer near Magherafelt will take place on Wednesday.

Yan Speirs (24) was taken to hospital following Saturday’s crash but died of his injuries.

A family notice said his funeral will be held at his Maghadone Road home on Wednesday for Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph and St. Malachy Church in Drumullan, with interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

SDLP Councilor Christine McFlynn said the death left a sense of sadness throughout the community.

“There is a deep sense of shock and sadness in Magherafelt today following a fatal collision involving a jammer on Saturday afternoon,” she said.

“A young man in his twenties was taken from his family and community far too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew him at this incredibly difficult time.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of ​​the crash on Saturday or has dash cam footage to report to the police as soon as possible.”

At around 4pm on August 13, it was reported that a jammer was involved in the crash on Castledawson Road.

Castledawson Road, which was closed between Pound Road and Castledawson Roundabout, reopened following the collision.

Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and police are calling on anyone with information, or anyone who has captured dash cam footage, to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1299 08/13/22.
