NC Women’s College removes white supremacy name from building

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A women’s college in North Carolina announced Wednesday that he renames a building after a white supremacist who supported unequal funding for schools based on race.

Meredith College in Raleigh’s board of trustees voted at a meeting last month to rename Joyner Hall after it discovered James Yadkin’s background as Joyner, according to an announcement posted on its webpage.

“We know some may disagree with the Board’s decision, but the continued hurt caused by Joyner’s initiative makes it untenable to continue to honor him – especially as an educator,” the announcement reads.

The move is part of Meredith’s anti-racism initiative. Nearly two years ago, the council joined historians, researchers, diversity consultants, and representatives of faculty, staff, and alumni to begin a review of the names of buildings on the campus of Meredith, which was built in 1925-26.

In addition to Joyner Hall’s renaming, the board approved the placement of signs with QR codes on every building on campus to provide historical context about all of the people for whom the buildings are currently named.

Campus buildings at UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina University are also named after Joyner.
