Burgum helps dedicate Fargo National Cemetery, building on ND’s history of honoring military service

HARWOOD, ND – Governor Doug Burgum today helped open the new Fargo National Cemetery near Harwood, noting that he continues North Dakota’s long history of honoring veterans for their military service.

“For the second time in the history of our state, we are dedicating a place of eternal rest as a tribute to military veterans who defended our freedom and upheld our most sacred values,” said Burgum. “Fifty-six thousand Veterans have made North Dakota their home, and it is our responsibility to honor their service and sacrifice – for some, the ultimate sacrifice. We are deeply grateful to the National Cemetery Administration, our Congressional delegation, and all who worked to create Fargo National Cemetery, which, along with the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, will provide our veterans the respect and final resting place near home they so richly deserve.

With over 3,000 graves, Fargo National Cemetery is the first Department of Veterans Affairs national cemetery built in North Dakota. This is part of the VA National Cemetery Administration’s rural initiative to provide access to VA burial benefits to veterans who live in rural areas and have not previously had reasonable access to a national cemetery or d ‘State for Veterans. North Dakota was one of 10 states without a national cemetery.

Burgum and the state legislature have taken several steps this year to support veterans and make North Dakota an even more military-friendly state, including:

  • Exemption of military retirement benefits from state income tax for retired military personnel and their spouses.
  • Provide funds to cover the burial expenses of spouses and dependents of military veterans at the State Veterans Cemetery with their loved ones, where they belong.
  • Provide reciprocal professional licensing to qualifying escape spouses of military personnel to help keep military families together and address the state’s labor shortage.
