A series of events will take place in the Carlisle area as part of the preparation for Armistice Day.

Laying of poppy crosses at war graves in Carlisle Cemetery (service will be held at the First World War Memorial)

Thursday, November 10: from 11 a.m.

Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson invites the public to join him in a short service to lay poppy crosses at the war graves in Carlisle Cemetery. This is the culmination of over 300 crosses being placed on each war grave in the cemetery and a total of 400 in the various cemeteries across Carlisle.

Armistice Day – City Memorial, City Center (Carlisle Greenmarket)

Friday, November 11: 11 a.m.

The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson will join veterans at the City War Memorial to mark the two minutes of silence for Armistice Day. The memorial service will involve local veterans and school children.

Remembrance Day

Friday, November 11: doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. event

The event will take place at St Cuthbert’s Church and is a ticketed event. Tickets are free and available at the Carlisle Visitor Information Center.

Remembrance Sunday – City Memorial, City Center (Carlisle Greenmarket)

Sunday, November 13: 11 a.m.

Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson will lead the Remembrance Day wreath laying ceremony, when a two-minute silence will be observed and a wreath will be laid by the Mayor. Former servicemen and women are invited to form up at Paternoster Row at 10.30am, ready to march to the War Memorial in Greenmarket for service. People wishing to lay wreaths must report to La Couronne and La Miter between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. All welcome.

The County Remembrance Service – Cenotaph, Rickerby Park

Sunday, November 13: 2:30 p.m.

Cumbria County Council Speaker, Cllr Andy Connell will join the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and other dignitaries including the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson to attend a wreath laying ceremony on Remembrance Day , organized by the Royal British Legion (Cumberland and Westmorland County Branch) and Cumbria County Council. Welcome to all.

Remembrance not only concerns those who fought in the two world wars of the last century, but also those who have participated in the many world conflicts since 1945 and those who are still fighting today. It’s about learning from the past and resolving to make the world a better place in the future.

The Carlisle and Stanwix branch of the Royal British Legion will operate a Poppy Shop in The Lanes shopping center from Saturday 29th October to Saturday 12th November, daily 10am-5pm, Sunday 12pm-4pm.

They will be located at 4 Grapes Lanes, near Muffin Break.
