The funeral of 12-year-old Wiktor Chojecki is due to take place tomorrow in Limerick. The child was killed in a car accident last Friday morning.
Over €8,000 in donations were raised in 48 hours to support Wiktor’s family after a family friend organized a fundraiser.
Wiktor, of Newcastle West, County Limerick, was killed while driving his family car which collided with a lorry at 2am last Friday just outside the village of Adare.
Wiktor was the sole occupant of the car. The truck driver, a man in his 40s, was reportedly badly shaken but should not have been hospitalized.
The fundraiser was started by Dominika Hogan, a friend of Wiktor’s parents, Ewa and Bartosz.
He has already raised more than €8,000, four times his initial goal of €2,000.
In a post attached to the GoFundMe page, Ms Hogan thanked those who offered their support.
“As we all know by now the tragic circumstances that happened over the weekend, a little man lost his life. We are trying to make things a little easier for the family by raising funds to cover the funeral expenses,” Ms. Hogan said.
“Also, to help our friends through what is going to be a very difficult road, any donation will be truly appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said.
Meanwhile, a local family store also offered to help.
The Sheahan store in Newcastle West has set up a donation box in their store, with proceeds going to the GoFundMe set up by Ms Hogan.
Wiktor’s funeral will take place tomorrow in Newcastle West, days after a vigil was held in the town square to mourn the passing of the young boy. A crowd of over 300 gathered to release balloons in Wiktor’s honor and to show their support for the family.
Wiktor, who is survived by his parents and sister, will be buried in Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle West, following his funeral at 11.30am at the local Church of the Immaculate Conception.
