Investigators say the 5.30pm fire appears to have started in a first-floor apartment following an extension cord malfunction.

The fire was contained to the single apartment, but smoke and water damage was reported throughout the building.

There was no indication in the state police press release about the number of people living in the building.

Authorities say there were no injuries.
